IT Services apprenticeship programme goes from strength to strength

Last August the University took its first steps into offering an apprenticeship programme in a number of disciplines – IT Services, Estates, Catering and Media. IT Services (ITS) was one of the main areas of the University to partake in the pilot, recruiting four apprentices.

The University provided initial central support for the apprentices, whilst in ITS, Line Managers and Mentors were established to provide support for the duration of the apprenticeship. The equivalent of one day per week was spent on job-relevant training – the other four days were spent on putting that training into practice and developing technical and interpersonal skills.

Of the four apprentices, one subsequently left. The remaining three were Harry Bamber – working on the Service Desk and in MDS; Billy Genner – Service Desk and LES; and Dzintars Romans – EPS.

The programme has been a huge success, with excellent feedback received from customers in all areas of the University. Dzintars and Billy have completed their Level 3 IT apprenticeships and Harry (who started a few weeks later) is set to complete imminently.

To date, Dzintars and Harry have been successful in securing full time employment within IT Services – in EPS and at the Service Desk respectively. We’d like to congratulate all three apprentices on their achievements!

In 2017-18 the apprenticeship programme has been extended further in End User Services, with five apprentices being taken on this time! During September, we will welcome the following to IT Services:

ITS HR Admin will send out further information and photos of the new apprentices when they arrive – alternatively, check the IT Services – New Starters page!

The apprenticeship programme would not have been such a great success without the help of many people – but in particular, Jake Saunders in EPS, Deborah Jenkinson at the Service Desk and Caleb Wright, the University’s Apprencticeship Coordinator, in HR.

For further details about the apprenticeship programme, please contact Ian Bowman, Head of End User Services.
