New! Service Release Management – helping to bring new or changed services into operation smoothly

Published: Posted on

Service Release Management will reduce priority 1 (P1) incidents resulting from problems during or immediately after a new or changed service is launched.

In an effort to reduce the number of issues raised after a new or changed service is launched, we’re introducing Service Release Management, a new discipline that will help us to bring services into operation smoothly. This new standardised process will ensure we ask the right questions, at the right time!

How will Service Release Management be implemented?

Experts from across IT Services have come together forming a Process Improvement Group. This group will drive a standardised approach to release management, which will include:

  • A framework process/policy
  • A release checklist – to be used for each release
  • ServiceNow improvements
  • Alignment with service management and the project gateways
How will this affect me?

You may be asked to fill one of the roles required in the release process during a service launch. This means you will be responsible for items on the Service Release Management checklist. Not every checklist item is applicable for every release – the Project Manager or Release Coordinator responsible for the launch of the service will help to scope this out.

What are the next steps?

The release checklist is currently being trialled by the Project Office, with a view to making it more widely available across the Service by the end of August. Wider work in Service Release Management, including alignment with Projects and Service Management, will continue through to the end of the year.

Even if you’re not directly involved with a service release, our internal subject matter experts would be grateful for any suggestions you may have regarding what to include in the release checklist. If you’ve an idea please contact Robert Spencer – Release Management Consultant.
