WMREDI has six Policy & Data Analyst Internships available starting this August. 

The West Midlands Regional Economic Development Institute (WMREDI) has been established following City-REDI’s significant grant award from Research England (UKRI). The team is an innovative hybrid approach of academic, policy research and support staff delivering relevant and impactful research with local, national and international partners.

Three professors with expertise in international business, local and regional economic development, innovation and entrepreneurship, skills and labour markets lead an inter-disciplinary team focused on a place-based approach to city region growth. All embedded within a Triple A rated Business School and Russell Group university.

Role Responsibilities 

The successful applicants will work with other members of the team to contribute to the objectives and delivery of one or more of WMREDI’s research themes in partnership with regional stakeholders, including the WMCA, LEPs, Chamber of Commerce and City Councils.

Six weeks internships with a view to starting in August 2021.

Salary range:

£25,000 to £29,999

The posts will contribute to:

  • the development of knowledge by undertaking a specific range of activities as part of the WMREDI programme of academic research, with a particular focus on the translation of academic research, policy engagement and impact and knowledge exchange.
  • the assessment and evaluation of the impacts of different economic policies and regional interventions over time and space.
  • the production of policy and practice outputs (such as research reports, policy briefings, blogs and presentations to support user engagement and impact).
  • wider City-REDI activities, including partner research projects and consultancy, external engagement events and support the development of practical tools and products and services in the above areas.
Person Specification

Post holders will contribute to research that ranges from qualitative case studies to surveys, data analytics and data visualisation, impact evaluation (of policy interventions and regional investments), and application of econometric modelling tools.

Selection criteria:

  • Strong academic performance
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience or previous knowledge in research or evaluation, public policy, economics, human geography, labour market studies, management and business studies or applied social science.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience of application of quantitative techniques, qualitative methods, survey methods, impact evaluation and/or data analytics tools.
  • Ability to prioritise own work under pressure.
  • Ability to work with initiative and think creatively.
  • Confidence to express new ideas and approaches.
  • Evidence of being able to plan a schedule of work and to deliver the plan to a strict deadline.
  • Ability to work within a team and collaboratively across the organisation.

The successful post-holders will report to specific project leads and the Business Development Director.
