  • 7 May, members of City-REDI attended the Birmingham Anchor Network Co-ordination group.
  • 15 May, members of City-REDI attended the Midlands Engine research, intelligence and policy partnership.
  • 16 May, City-REDI held an academic seminar with Helen Jarvis from the University of Newcastle: Civic Universities for a Civil Society: (Un)Learning Habits of Impact, Engagement, and Action for Change.
  • 21 May, Rebecca Riley chaired a panel on place policy at the UPEN  conference.
  • 22 May, City-REDI held its annual CRESSY event, sharing research work with other team members.
  • 23 May, City-REDI held an academic seminar with Maria Abreu from the University of Cambridge: A Capability-Approach Perspective on Regional Development.
  • 6 June, City-REDI held an academic seminar with Pelin Demirel from Imperial College: How Does Environmental Sustainability Affect Firm Value? Understanding the Impact of Firm Capabilities and Signalling.
  • 19 June, Sara Hassan delivered the keynote speech and opening remarks at Civicon 2024, focusing on international perspectives for civic universities.
  • 21 June, Anne Green spoke and provided an ‘Overview of Skills and Employment: Key Policy Challenges’ at an event on ‘Post-16 Employment in Birmingham’ hosted by Birmingham City Council.
  • 24  June, Anne Green spoke in a session on ‘Beyond Growth? Alternative approaches to regional development and the implications for a new industrial strategy’ at the Insights North East Annual Conference in Sunderland.
  • 26 June, Research England visit to Campus to review investments, Rebecca Riley and Anne Green presenting on the West Midlands Regional Economic Development Institute.
  • 26 June, West Midlands Devolution deal working group, Rebecca Riley and Fumi Kitagawa attended to look at manifestos and Impact on the region, round up of key developments a reviewing Innovation Prospectus feedback.
  • 27 June, City-REDI held an academic seminar with Dilum Dissanayake from the University of Birmingham: E-Mobility Hubs in the UK and Europe: Highlights of the Current Research (by my awesome research team!)

  • In May, Anne Green discussed what the ​next ​government ​should ​do ​to ​address ​regional ​inequalities ​in ​England on CIPFA’s podcast.
  • 29 May, Huanjia Ma, Matt Lyons and Raquel Ortega-Argilés had an article published in Research Professional News called “To level up, make regional R&D funding more equal”.

Awards/ Funding
  • The British Academy Awards Two Innovation Fellowships – The two award holders will be partnering with our Local Policy Innovation Partnership (LPIP) Hub team to help support local and national policymakers in tackling policy issues such as levelling up challenges, driving sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and reducing regional disparities in the UK.
  • In May, Charlotte Hoole, Chloe Billing, Dalila Ribaudo and Tasos Kitsos were announced as winners of the IRC Open Call, and will receive IRC funding for their project “Building winners: the policy levers for impactful innovation”.
  • In June, Town Planning Review editors selected the paper 9DF: A Nine-Dimensional Framework for Community Engagement by Sara Hassan and Lucy Natarajan as their Feature Article of the Year.
Policy Engagement
  • 14 May, Sara Hassan, James Davies and Hannes Read attended a policy roundtable with the British Academy on Universities as Social and Cultural Infrastructure.
  • 14 May, George Bramley attended the West Midlands Social Economy Growth Advisory Group. George has also been elected to the Board of Trustees for the UK Evaluation Society for three years
  • 15 May, George Bramley attend a Board meeting for the UK Evaluation Society. He has also been elected to the Board of Trustees for the Society for three years.
  • 20 May, Annum Rafique attended the National Retrofitting Hub Working Group 1’s workshop on “What is needed from EPC reform to enable good quality retrofit at scale”.
  • 21 May, Kostas Kollydas from City-REDI participated in the HEPI webinar on non-continuation in UK universities. He presented his research on factors affecting the dropout behaviour of students in UK higher education, with a particular emphasis on ethnic differences.
