
Advanced Research Computing (ARC) at the University of Birmingham is seeking to appoint a Research Software Engineer (DevOps and Automation). This is a permanent post in the BEAR Apps team, part of the award-winning ARC team, which delivers the Birmingham Environment for Academic Research (BEAR) and operates the UKRI-funded Baskerville National Capability for Accelerated Research.
BEAR provides the computing infrastructure that powers research across the University, from Music to Medicine, Computer Science to Theology, Physics to English, and everything in between. Behind these services sits a growing collection of web applications, automation, and integration software that helps researchers make the most of world-class computing resources. That’s where this role comes in.
As an RSE in the BEAR Apps team, you’ll help design, develop and support the software that underpins BEAR services. You’ll build web applications, Python libraries and automation tools that integrate with research infrastructure, cloud platforms and University systems. Your work will make services more reliable, scalable and easier to use, enabling researchers to spend less time managing technology and more time doing research.
The role combines software engineering with DevOps and systems automation. You’ll work on everything from developing new services and APIs to improving deployment pipelines, automating operational workflows and integrating systems such as GitLab and ServiceNow. Alongside colleagues from across ARC, you’ll help shape how services are designed, delivered and operated, contributing to technical decisions and continually improving engineering practices.
You’ll join a friendly, collaborative team that values sharing knowledge, reviewing code and solving problems together.
