City-REDI / WMREDI, University of Birmingham launches a new set of data dashboards to accompany the Birmingham Economic Review 2022. The dashboards provide data insights for Birmingham's GVA, unemployment rate and CO2 emissions. The Birmingham Economic Review data dashboards are part of the WMREDI Data Lab.
The Birmingham Economic Review is an in-depth exploration of the economy of England’s second city and a high-quality resource for informing research, policy and investment decisions. It is produced in partnership with the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.
The 2022 Review provides comprehensive analysis and expert commentary on the state of the city-region’s economy as it deals with a series of economic shocks, from Brexit, through the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ukraine situation and subsequent increases in energy costs and food prices, to ongoing uncertainties around interest rates, debt and the strength of our currency.
City-REDI / WMREDI has developed a set of dashboards to accompany the release of the Birmingham Economic Review 2022, to provide data insight into the state of the regional economy, its businesses and people. The current dashboards cover economic output, unemployment and carbon emissions across three Review themes: Economy, People and Place.
Each dashboard utilises the same layout to provide a time series, regional map and metric-specific breakdown to aid trend and comparative analysis. The current set of dashboards includes:
- Economy: regional gross value added (at current prices), including a breakdown by industry.
- People: unemployment rate for the working age population (aged 16-64) with a further breakdown by age group.
- Place: territorial carbon dioxide emissions for the region and per capita emissions across each sector.
Additional dashboards covering trade, R&D, employment, demographics, deprivation, skills, transport, and more are in development and planned for future release.
Note that the Review focuses on the geography of the ‘Greater Birmingham city-region’ defined by the boundaries of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBS LEP). The GBS LEP area consists of the following local authorities: Birmingham, Solihull, Bromsgrove, Cannock Chase, East Staffordshire, Lichfield, Redditch, Tamworth, Wyre Forest.
Where possible the dashboards utilise data that aligns with the GBS LEP geography. Where this is not possible, data for the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) or West Midlands ITL1 region is used instead, or as otherwise defined.
