Local and Central Government
  • Anne Green and Abigail Taylor presented work on ‘Place-based employment support: learning from Connecting Communities in the West Midlands’ in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Learning and Development series on 12th September 2023.
  • City-REDI and WMREDI researchers participated in the West Midlands Combined Authority’s  (WMCA) Economic Symposium at the Library of Birmingham on 20th September. Anne Green, Donald Houston and Rebecca Riley presented on ‘Changing labour supply and economic inactivity in the West Midlands’ and Chris Millward and Anne Green presented on ‘What are the public policy options for the WMCA to capitalise on its university strengths?’
  • On 26th September, Matt Lyons presented to the Welsh Government’s Welsh Economic Statistics User Group. Can R&D policy help rebalance the UK economy? A multi-regional input-output approach.
Events – presenting work/speaking engagements
  • Dr Sara Hassan presented a paper titled “Co-producing urban transport policy with communities, a route to decarbonise transport” at the Royal Geographic Society Conference in London 30 August to 1 September 2023. See link to conference here.
  • Dr Sara Hassan presented her paper titled “Communities in Energy Transition: Planning for Decarbonisation and Net Zero in the UK” at the UK Ireland Planning Research Conference 2023 Planning on a Crisis Footing in Glasgow 4-6 September 2023. See link to conference here.
  • Dr Sara Hassan sat on a panel discussing Engaged Urban Pedagogies sharing her recently published book chapter “Co-production and the pedagogy of exchange: Lessons ‎‎from community ‎‎research training in Birmingham” at the UK Ireland Planning Research Conference 2023.   • On 9th September, Simon Collinson gave a keynote presentation on “Universities + Business: Manufacturing Partnerships for Inclusive Regional Development” at the 19th International Symposium on Global Manufacturing and China (GMC23). This is an annual series of meetings hosted by the Institute for Manufacturing at the University of Cambridge and Zhejiang University, in Hangzhou China. Drawing on examples from the University of Birmingham’s collaboration with local firms in the West Midlands he outlined how stronger partnerships can improve the growth prospects of regional economies.
  • Abigail Taylor presented work with Anne Green, Hannes Read and George Bramley on ‘Addressing Regional Inequalities in the UK’ at the CIPFA, Public Finance Live 2023 conference on 14th September in Edinburgh.
  • Fumi Kitagawa presented a paper “Linking STEM Assets as Innovation Intermediaries in Local R&D Ecosystems: Lessons from the West Midlands Region in the UK” at Regional Innovation Policies Conference, Jonkoping International Business School, 21-23 September 2023.
Look ahead to the coming months…
  • City-REDI / WMREDI will be hosting a fringe event at the Labour Party conference on 9th October.
  • City-REDI will be hosting the Birmingham Economic Review on 26th October with the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.
