City-REDI Seminar Series: Predicting the Past: A Machine Learning Approach to Detect Innovative Firms in Time of Crisis

Published: Posted on

Presenter:  Marco Guerzoni, Associate Professor of Applied Economics, Department of Economics and Statistics “Cognetti de Martiis”, University of Turin

On the 23rd of October 2019, Marco Guerzoni presented the first City-REDI seminar of 2019. You can watch a video of the presentation below (Apologies but there is a slight buzz on the recording).

Abstract: This paper aims to compare the behaviour of innovative start-ups vs. non-innovative start-ups in terms of both economic performance and survival in time of crisis.

By leveraging on a very comprehensive dataset we adopt a multifaceted definition of innovative firms, rather than simply relying on patents or self-reported survey such as the Community Innovation Survey. We make use of a novel approach which employs supervised machine learning techniques to identify innovative firms in the past.
