City-REDI / WMREDI Round Up – October 2022

Events – presenting work / speaking engagements

• City-REDI / WMREDI held two fringe events during the party conference season. Professor Adam Tickell hosted the second event held at The Exchange.
• On 19^th October, City-REDI / WMREDI hosted the Civic Network Advisory Group Dinner at The Exchange.
• On 20^th October, City-REDI and the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce held the launch event for the Birmingham Economic Review 2022.
• On 24^th October, City-REDI and the ONS held the ONS Economic Forum, looking at the current state of the UK economy and data analysis at the local level.

Media engagements

• Professor Anne Green and Dr Kostas featured in the HEPI blog with an article called “Key Facts and Figures about the Graduate Technical workforce”.
• Professor Simon Collinson wrote a blog for the Impact of Social Science blog, LSE – Linking research to localities – The City-Region Economic Development Institute (City-REDI).
• Professor John Goddard featured in The Irish News, discussing higher education in Ireland.

Reports / publications released

• The Birmingham Economic Review 2022 was released on 20^th October.
• A new policy briefing from WMREDI reviews the financial health of the 50^th largest manufacturing firms in the West Midlands.
• A new report by Maryna Ramcharan looks at the Equality Act 2010 and how the incomes of ethnic minorities changed when the new legislation came into force.

Local and Central Government

• City-REDI hosted a sandpit with interested local policy officials and academics on what long term evaluation or study into the impacts of the Commonwealth Games may cover and how it might be funded on 21st October. It was invitation only event held at the Exchange with some delegates joining remotely.

Awards/ Funding

• A series of reports on levelling-Up and Regional Inequality co-produced by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and City-REDI won silver at the Association Excellence Awards in the ‘Best Awareness Campaign or Advancement of a Cause (launched in 2022) category’.
• WMREDI are part of a new partnership helping universities to maximise their local impact – the National Civic Impact Accelerator (NCIA), led by Sheffield Hallam University.

Look ahead to the coming months…

• Hannes Read will be presenting at an event for the UK Evaluation Society called “Perspectives from the Evaluation industry: Academia and Consultancy” on 7^th November 2022.
• On 8^th November, City-REDI / WMREDI will be hosting an ESRC Festival of Science event with Stan’s Café called “Where does all the money Birmingham City Council spend go?”.
